The following instructions cover typical usage of Netscape Messenger and assume the software has been installed correctly on your system.

The instructions are only for individuals with a direct Internet connection, by modem or network. If you are behind a firewall or proxy server, the information below may not work. Consult your network administrator for more information.

Note: You may find it helpful to print this page for reference during account setup.

Setting Up Your Email Account (or client)
  1. Open Netscape Messenger.
  2. Click Edit on the menu bar.
  3. Click Preferences in the Edit menu (See Figure 1).
  4. Click Identity under the Mail & Newsgroups section of the Preferences window (See Figure 2).
  5. Complete the following fields in the Preferences window (See Figure 2).
    • Your Name - The name from which any email sent using this profile will display.
    • Email Address - The email address from which any email sent using this profile will display.
  6. Click Mail Servers under the Mail & Newsgroups section of the Preferences box (See Figure 3).
  7. Click Edit under Incoming Mail Servers (See Figure 3).
  8. Complete the following fields in the Mail Server Properties Box (See Figure 4):
    • Server Name - The mail server from which email is to be retrieved.
      • "mail.yourdomain.com". (example mail.jwnetsource.com)
    • Server Type - All JW NetSource mail servers use the POP3 protocol. Do not change the server type to anything other than POP3.
    • User Name - The account name that you have been assigned to access your email. The name assigned here does not display on outgoing email. It is simply for access to your email account and is typically your first name initial and your last name (John Doe would use jdoe).
  9. Click OK to return to the Preferences window.
  10. Complete the following fields under Outgoing Mail Server.
    • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - The mail server through which email will be sent.
      • You should use your ISP's outgoing mail server. Many ISPs block port 25 (email server port) in an attempt to block email spammers. In some cases you may be able to use your mail server, which is: "mail.yourdomain.com".
  11. Click OK to close the Preferences window.
Unfortunately, Netscape Messenger does not natively support retrieval of multiple email accounts for POP3 mail servers. To retrieve mail from multiple accounts, you will need to setup additional user profiles using the User Profile Manager supplied with Netscape. See your Netscape documentation for more information.

There are many more options available in Netscape Messenger. See the software's documentation for more information about advanced options.

Please contact JW NetSource for more information.
